Bruce's Visual Basic Software Utilities

Over the years I've written many utility programs to help in my technical writing business. Some I've released as shareware or freeware. Here they are! I also write killer front-ends for Microsoft Access databases.

RENAMER File Renamer Utility

Okay, I know it's easy to rename files using Explorer or other Windows utilities. I wrote RENAMER to make it easier to date and rename all those cryprically-titled photographs that you get from digital cameras or from photo CDs. (No, of course RENAMER can't change the name on the CD!) I use this program a lot.

When you click on a filename, RENAMER displays its picture (if the file is a bitmap that RENAMER understands), and also converts the filename into an upper-and-lowercase version that it displays in the bottom text box. Change anything you like in the text box, then click the "Rename" button. (The "C" and "P" buttons are for cutting and pasting text in the rename text box, for when you are naming a series of similar files.)

A simple but useful utility. (1.63 meg download) Download RENAME.ZIP version 1.0.2.

Cost: If you like it and use it, go to www.mscb.com and buy one of the Middle Spunk Creek Boys' albums.

PRINT DISPATCHER File Printing Utility

(While I used to use this program daily, it's of less importance since really fast computers have arrived. And it doesn't seem to work under XP.  And you can forget VISTA!)

If you print more than one copy of heavy-duty color graphics (or of large documents), you can save lots of time by printing just one copy "to file." Then, whenever you need to print it again, you can skip the long printer-driver number crunching and send the pre-computed file to the printer...except that Windows doesn't let you!

Many professionals have an inkjet or other binary color printer, as well as a PostScript printer online. PRINT DISPATCHER automatically detects whether your file is ASCII (PostScript) or binary, and sends it to the correct printer. (This detection can be turned off, or overridden at print time.) A list of print files is maintained for your recurring printer files (like letterhead, envelopes, etc.).

Download PrintDispatcher.zip version 1.0.0 (2.09 meg)

Cost: If you like it and use it, go to www.mscb.com and buy one of the Middle Spunk Creek Boys' albums.

HP Scanner Kludge

Overcomes "Sorry, the scanner has experienced an error" problem when using the ADF.

My Scanjet IICX works fine, but when I use the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder), if always returns the above error, even though it completed the scan just fine, and properly ejected the paper. It's some kind of HP Twain driver / SCSI issue that will never be fixed.

I wrote a program that waits for Deskscan II to put up the error; the program then "clicks" the OK button on the error window, then types in the next filename in the "Save As" dialog box.  It's real klunky, with shaky reliability. But it beats doing everything a page at a time!

(Only works with Deskscan II. Alas, programs like PaperPort see the original error, and assume that the scan wasn't good.)

I haven't made this program "public ready" at all, and I don't really remember all of how it works.  Here's the VB source code.  GOOD LUCK!    ScannerKludge.zip
